CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
17 MILE DRIVE

Carmel is a very upscale village on the ocean, reachable from Monterey by the 17 Mile Drive along the coast. The cypresses here exist only a few other places in the world--notably, South Africa. The renowned golf course, Pebble Beach, is tucked on either side of the drive. It may have been Robert Louis Stevenson who called the area the most beautiful meeting of land and ocean on the planet. The village, once a haven for millionaire folksingers and political radicals, as well as the military's language school, is now wholly given over to tourism, corporate boutiques, and restaurants.
