LAKE TAHOE - TAHOE CITY

Lake Tahoe was a bit of a disappointment: the circular drive round the lake with so few exits, and with all business and activity strung in a circular line around the shoreline made me feel claustrophobic--in part because of the surrounding/enveloping mountains. The town is at 7000 feet elevation, and it was chilly. A few days after we departed, they got a foot of snow, and all the neighboring ski areas opened for business. We were there in the gap between summer tourists and winter skiers, so hotels were cheap: low season chic. For excitement I presume one must go to Reno, but my associations with the emotional tonalities of Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and the rest of The Misfits cast and crew--last film made by several of them--make that town evoke less than cheery associations for me. I'm sure it is much nicer in high season.
