MENDOCINO, CA

Our drive north of Point Arena took us to Mendocino, and on first drive-through, we decided to head north to Ft. Bragg, on grounds that Mendocino consisted mostly of boutiques. We did have lunch in Ft. Bragg, but decided that its "charms" though simpler, would appeal to others more than to us, so we did a u-turn back to Mendocino, and were glad we did. You've seen the town many times at the movies and on TV, since it is much used as location for filming. The town was created sort of all at once by Yankee Victorians, who made it a perfect set for a movie--sort of Marblehead with booming surf against the cliffs. Our little B&B was exceptionally fussy, and since there was no TV, I amused myself by wandering through the other empty rooms to make the acquaintance of the hotel cat, who seemed proud to possess a collection of dog paintings and drawings. By morning I was thoroughly charmed, espcially by one of the best dinners we had on the entire trip.
