PLACENTIA, CA

Just south of the world-renowned tourist attraction, Yorba Linda, birthplace of our esteemed ex-president Richard Nixon, Placentia provided a stop to visit an old friend, Marty, who was my accompanist and partner in crime in my youthful (perhaps criminal) efforts in the world of vocal music. Marty went on to a distinguished career as a pianist, professor, teacher of piano teachers, and music writer. Her comfortable house in Placentia afforded shelter after a month's nights in hotels, not to mention breakfast at MiMi's with her industrial psychologist friend, Keith. She managed to embarrass me by playing excerpts from records I made in the late 50s with college groups, though I bow to no one who'd challenge my dramatic solo interpretation of a phrase from Deep River--"that promised land, where all is peace." Already California dreamin' at age 22, almost 45 years ago.
