SACRAMENTO

From Tahoe, we scooted over into Gold Country with the idea of staying a night in Nevada City, rumored to be an artsy village full of ex-hippies. The drive into the town was wonderful, but encounters with a few people in a coffee shop and at an intended hotel made us decide to drive on west to Sonoma. We stopped in Sacramento only long enough to have lunch in the tree tops on a deck above the Sacramento River, then, having conquered Donner Pass, slid down towards next stop, wine country.
