SANTA MONICA, CA

We chose centrally located Santa Monica in the Los Angeles area as our home base, since the air by the ocean is cleaner, and for easy access to the freeway system via the Santa Monica Freeway. From there we made forays to Hollywood, Bellaire, Pasadena, Venice, downtown Los Angeles, and so on. It was a good choice, though the Los Angeles area, my home for five years during grad school, is still worst among California cities, I believe, and for the usual list of reasons: air quality, traffic, congestion, suburban sprawl, malls, and so on and on. All true. Hollywood is as grungy as ever. Pasadena has changed remarkably since I lived in the area--though the place across from the park in South Pasadena where I lived in a treehouse for a couple years long ago, still exists.
